Who are we?

The Matterhorn Railway is a cog railway in Zermatt in the canton of Valais. The valley station of the railway is located at 1604 metres in the centre of the village of Zermatt. The Matterhorn Railway takes you up to an altitude of 3089 metres on the Gornergrat. The station on the Gornergrat is the highest outdoor station in Europe. The cog railway was opened in 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the first electrically driven cog railway in Switzerland.

The Gornergrat lies between 29 four-thousand-metre peaks and several glaciers. It is a starting point for many mountain hikes. The Gorner Glacier is the second longest glacier in the Alps. From the Gornergrat you can enjoy the probably most beautiful view of the famous Matterhorn. In winter the Gornergrat is located in the heart of the Zermatt ski area.
